Nusantara Explorer Train to Launch, Indonesian 'Orient Express' with Cultural Focus

Indonesia is preparing to launch the 'Nusantara Explorer,' a new luxury tourist train aimed at boosting domestic travel. This train is envisioned not just as a mode of transport but as a versatile venue for tourism, gatherings, events, reunions, and meetings. During a trial ride from Semarang to Jakarta last week, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon highlighted the train's unique appeal. He expressed optimism about its potential popularity, stating, "It seems that from the conversations, the response from many people is that there will be many people who will be interested." The train's concept uniquely combines travel, a gathering space, and tourist experiences within a single carriage. Fadli Zon compared the train to the legendary European luxury train, the Orient Express, while emphasizing that "Indonesianness" is prominently featured. He noted that the batik motifs and decorations inside the train are elements that highlight Indonesian values. According to Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, the 'Nusantara Explorer' was prepared under the direction of President Prabowo Subianto as part of efforts to develop train-based tourism. While state-owned railway company PT KAI already has a subsidiary managing tourist trains, the President requested the introduction of new carriages and enhanced integration with the country's flagship tourist destinations. The train is currently undergoing trial runs and evaluations before its operational schedule is determined. Prasetyo Hadi indicated the possibility of its launch within this year. He also praised PT KAI's capability in producing train cars of international quality. Furthermore, the development of tourist trains extends beyond carriages to include extensions to connected tourist destinations. Specifically, plans are being considered to revive the Semarang-Magelang railway line to support the Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and to connect with the Yogyakarta region and Prambanan Temple. These initiatives aim to link Indonesia's rich cultural heritage and tourism resources, thereby enhancing the appeal of domestic tourism.
