Volcanic Ash Closes Airport, Stranding Passengers Bound for Jakarta

Jakarta, Indonesia - The spread of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau has forced the closure of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, impacting numerous passengers bound for the capital city. This situation has compelled passengers originating from Kupang to seek alternative travel arrangements, as direct flights to Jakarta have been suspended. One such option involves rerouting flights to Surabaya and then continuing the journey to Jakarta by land. Azizah, a passenger from Maumere, arrived at El Tari Airport in Kupang on Monday morning for her connecting flight to Jakarta, only to be informed that all flights to the capital had been canceled. Her initial plan was to fly from Kupang to Surabaya and then travel to Jakarta by bus or train. However, she encountered difficulties securing tickets to Surabaya due to exceptionally high demand. Azizah is also in the process of obtaining a refund for her canceled flight ticket, a process expected to take one to two months. She hopes for a swift improvement in atmospheric conditions to allow for the reopening of routes to Jakarta. Jefri, another passenger heading to Jakarta, shared a similar experience. He had anticipated the cancellations after receiving an official notification from the airline on Sunday evening. He has already processed his refund online and plans to take a flight from Kupang to Surabaya, followed by a train journey to Jakarta. Jefri expressed his hope that the operational disruptions caused by the eruption will be resolved promptly, enabling flights to and from Jakarta to return to normal by the time his business in the capital is concluded.
