Jakarta Implements Remote Learning Due to Anak Krakatau Volcano Eruption

The Jakarta provincial government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) has announced the implementation of remote learning (Pembelajaran Jarak Jauh: PJJ) for all schools in the province starting Monday, September 7, 2026. This decision comes in response to the volcanic ash dispersal from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. The remote learning policy will apply to all educational institutions, including early childhood education, community learning centers, special needs schools, elementary, junior high, senior high, and vocational high schools, both public and private. The provincial government stated that the implementation of PJJ is a precautionary measure to protect children from exposure to volcanic ash. "The health of children is our priority, as they are considered a vulnerable group," the official Pemprov DKI Jakarta account stated on Instagram. Volcanic ash from the Anak Krakatau eruption has already reached several areas within Jakarta. Governor Pramono Anung urged residents to remain calm and vigilant. Pramono noted that Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at Alert Level III (Siaga), and residents should increase their vigilance if their residential areas begin to be affected by volcanic ash. He also advised citizens to take preventive measures to reduce the impact of volcanic ash, such as wearing masks, closing doors, windows, and water sources, and limiting outdoor activities.
