Yangon-Mandalay Expressway users urged to dispose of trash properly due to risk of accidents from indiscriminate dumping

It has been learned that the Expressway Maintenance and Supervision Committee has issued a warning urging users to dispose of trash properly on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway, as indiscriminate dumping by some road users can affect not only the cleanliness of the road but also the safe passage of vehicles. The Expressway, which is 365 miles and 3 furlongs long from Yangon to Mandalay, is an important Union highway. Road maintenance work for the cleanliness of the road and the safety of vehicles is being carried out by staff from the Ministry of Construction, the Road Administration Department, and the Expressway Maintenance and Supervision Committee. Some road users are throwing trash from their vehicles onto the road and roadside, dumping trash while parked, and leaving behind trash after eating and drinking by the roadside without cleaning it up. Although trash bins are designated at toll gates, security checkpoints, and rest camps, trash is found to be dumped indiscriminately in some places. Stray dogs can carry this trash onto the highway, causing it to scatter on the road and potentially creating a hazard for vehicles. Although the trash is cleaned up daily, the workload and manpower for staff have increased as they have to carry out garbage cleaning operations in addition to their road maintenance duties, according to the warning. Therefore, the relevant authorities have informed expressway users not to dump their trash indiscriminately on the road, roadside, or parking areas, but to take their trash with them and dispose of it properly only in designated trash disposal areas.
