Suspect Arrested in Phnom Penh for Defrauding Citizens Using Fake Telegram Accounts

In Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, a man has been arrested for impersonating police officers and defrauding citizens through fake Telegram accounts. The suspect, identified as Sok Sovannavisa, a 35-year-old male with no fixed occupation, was apprehended on September 11th at approximately 3:02 PM. The arrest took place in a rented room located at Room 2, House 26, Concrete Road (Group 9), Prek Takhong 3 Village, Chak Angre Leu Commune, Meanchey District, Phnom Penh. The operation was a collaborative effort between the Toul Kork District Police Inspectorate and the Meanchey District Police Inspectorate. Authorities allege that the suspect created fake Telegram accounts using the names of district police chiefs and several station chiefs to carry out fraudulent activities against citizens. During the operation, law enforcement officers seized evidence including one mobile phone (itel brand), believed to be the device used in the commission of the crime. The suspect and the seized evidence have been temporarily detained at the Toul Kork District Police Inspectorate. Further legal proceedings are expected to follow. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of online scams in Cambodia, particularly those that exploit public trust by impersonating authority figures. Authorities continue to urge the public to be vigilant against such fraudulent activities.
