Jakarta Hit by Volcanic Ash, Governor Urges Residents to Follow '5 Ms'

The Governor of Jakarta has urged residents to remain calm and vigilant following the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau, which has reached several areas, including Jakarta. Pramono stated that Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at Level 3, or Siaga (Alert). He asked Jakarta residents who are beginning to be affected by the volcanic ash to take steps to protect themselves and their families. "Especially to the people of Jakarta, I urge you to remain calm and vigilant. Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at level three or Siaga. Volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau has now spread to several regions in Indonesia, including Jakarta," Pramono said via his Instagram account @pramonoanungw, Sunday (6/9/2026). Pramono urged residents to implement the '5 Ms' if their residential areas or activities begin to be affected by volcanic ash. One of them is wearing a mask to protect themselves from ash exposure. "If your area is starting to be affected by volcanic ash, implement the 5 Ms: wear a mask; close doors, windows, and water sources; limit outdoor activities; clean the ash by wetting it first; monitor information from official channels, and do not spread information that has not been well verified," he said. In addition to wearing masks, residents are asked to close doors and windows and protect water sources from ash exposure. Outdoor activities also need to be limited while the area is affected by volcanic ash. Pramono also asked the public not to clean the ash in a dry condition. The ash needs to be wetted first before cleaning to prevent it from flying back up. "Stay vigilant, protect yourself and your family.
