Singapore Ambassador Praises Phnom Penh's Security and Investment Climate, Cites Online Scam Crackdown
The Singaporean Ambassador lauded Phnom Penh's security and investment environment, commending Governor Khuong Sreng's leadership. He specifically noted that efforts to combat online scams enhance investor confidence. The strengthening of bilateral cooperation in economic and tourism sectors was also confirmed.
H.E. Mr. Steven Pang Chee Wee, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Singapore to the Kingdom of Cambodia, stated that Governor Khuong Sreng of the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has been praised as one of the strong leaders for maintaining security, development, and earning the respect of the people in the capital city. The Ambassador's remarks were made during a courtesy call on Governor Khuong Sreng at the Phnom Penh City Hall on the morning of July 30, 2026. Mr. Steven Pang Chee Wee said that since arriving in Phnom Penh, he has had the opportunity to participate in many major events, and at these events, government officials and leaders of Cambodia have always praised the leadership of Governor Khuong Sreng as a strong leader. He added that through Governor Khuong Sreng's work activities, his strong leadership is truly demonstrated, as Governor Khuong Sreng has dedicated himself to the people facing difficulties to understand their living conditions and suffering. Ambassador Steven Pang Chee Wee further stated that they will further strengthen the relationship and cooperation between the two countries in sectors such as education, development, economy, health, and tourism. He noted that the current four daily flights between Singapore and Cambodia demonstrate the vibrancy of people-to-people connections. Mr. Steven Pang Chee Wee also added that Cambodia is a "colorful and beautiful country," which is a significant attraction for tourism. He mentioned that previously, only Angkor Wat was known, but now Cambodia is recognized for having many attractive tourist destinations and a rich variety of food. Regarding the tourism sector, Singaporean media have also widely publicized Cambodia, and the Ambassador himself has also promoted the good aspects of Cambodia to Singapore, including security maintenance and attracting investors and tourists. Ambassador Steven Pang Chee Wee stated that what businessmen and investors consider first is their personal safety, and he assured these businessmen and investors due to the efforts of the Cambodian government and the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration to eliminate and clear out online scams. He emphasized that the Governor of Phnom Penh has a firm stance in cracking down on these crimes. He conveyed this message and assured Singaporean citizens regarding the efforts of the government and the Phnom Penh administration in cracking down on online scams, guaranteeing their trust when visiting Cambodia. In response, Governor Khuong Sreng, during the courtesy meeting, elaborated on the general situation of Phnom Penh, especially the development of the capital city in all sectors in recent years. Governor Khuong Sreng continued that ONLINE SCAMS are a complex issue not only for Cambodia but for the entire world. However, under the determination of Prime Minister Hun Manet, Cambodia is moving towards a "white economy," and Phnom Penh has been actively working to eradicate online scams from the capital. Governor Khuong Sreng added that the Kingdom of Cambodia is among the first countries to recognize Singapore's independence after Singapore separated from the Federation of Malaysia in 1965. The Republic of Singapore and the Kingdom of Cambodia established diplomatic relations on August 10, 1965, but they were severed in 1975 and re-established on January 18, 1992.
