Myanmar President Backs Cambodia's Stance on Thai Border Dispute Resolution

PHNOM PENH, Sept 11, 2026 (KPT) — Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing has expressed full support for Cambodia’s stance that border disputes with Thailand should be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law, Cambodian officials said Friday. Senate spokesman Chea Thyrith said the Myanmar leader made the remarks during a meeting with Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen as part of his two‑day state visit to Cambodia. According to Thyrith, Samdech Techo reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to resolving border tensions through peaceful mechanisms and legal frameworks, despite what Phnom Penh describes as the occupation of its territory by Thailand. “International law is a significant approach to resolving border issues and is the ultimate approach to resolving border issues peacefully,” Thyrith quoted Samdech Techo Hun Sen as saying. Samdech Techo also told the Myanmar president that Cambodia would not recognise any new boundary determined through force or coercion. Thyrith said Min Aung Hlaing voiced optimism that a peaceful resolution would help restore stability along the frontier and expressed his full support for Cambodia’s position. The Myanmar president is visiting Cambodia from September 11 to 12 at the invitation of King Norodom Sihamoni. His programme includes bilateral talks with Prime Minister Hun Manet and meetings with other senior leaders, focusing on strengthening relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest. During his stay, Min Aung Hlaing is also scheduled to lay wreaths at Cambodia’s Independence Monument and at the Royal Statue of the late King Norodom Sihanouk, the King‑Father of Cambodia.
