High fences, approximately 2.5 to 3 meters tall, have been suddenly erected at several major shopping malls in Jakarta and Surabaya, sparking widespread discussion on social media. Some speculate this is a precautionary measure against anticipated large-scale demonstrations and potential unrest in August. Malls such as Kota Kasablanka and Gandaria City in Jakarta, and Pakuwon Mall, Pakuwon City Mall, Royal Plaza, and Tunjungan Plaza in Surabaya, have reportedly installed these fences. In response, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan stated that while he understands the concerns, excessive worry is unnecessary. He plans to request mall management to promptly remove the newly installed high fences. He assured that coordination with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) would be maintained to ensure Jakarta remains safe and enjoyable. Governor Baswedan suggested that the fences might be a response to concerns similar to those experienced during large demonstrations last August. Meanwhile, Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan indicated that there are no serious issues concerning the installation of high fences at malls. He stated that he has communicated with relevant associations, including the Indonesian Shopping Mall Management Association (APPBI), and has been informed that the situation remains stable. Alphonzus Widjaja, Chairman of APPBI, explained that fencing is not new to the retail industry, with many malls built with them from the start. For malls that have recently installed fences, the primary reasons are to maintain internal order, manage visitor access, and provide a clear perimeter for security, especially in areas prone to demonstrations. Kombes Pol Budi Hermanto, Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, confirmed that no official notification of large-scale protests has been received. However, the police are continuously monitoring the situation, including online activity, and have established a "Preventive Strike" team to take swift and appropriate action if necessary.
