Jakarta Malls Erect High Fences; Governor Orders Removal

DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated his intention to order the removal of high fences recently erected at several shopping malls in the capital. The governor acknowledged awareness of the issue, which has seen fences up to 2.5 meters tall installed, particularly at the Kota Kasabanka mall, and plans to instruct management to dismantle them promptly. Governor Anung expressed the view that excessive caution is not beneficial. He pledged to coordinate with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), and other law enforcement agencies to ensure Jakarta remains safe, comfortable, and enjoyable for all its residents. He emphasized his commitment to providing a secure environment that allows everyone to enjoy Jakarta. The installation of these fences is suspected to be a precautionary measure in response to reports of large-scale demonstrations anticipated in August. This concern appears to stem from the significant public protests that occurred in August of the previous year, fueled by accumulated public anger over increased parliamentary allowances and economic pressures, and further exacerbated by an incident involving an online motorcycle taxi driver being run over by a police tactical vehicle on August 28, 2025.
