Philippine Peso Extends Gains for Third Day on Softer US Inflation

The Philippine peso sustained its rally against the dollar for the third consecutive day on Friday, closing at P61.587:$1, an appreciation of 3.3 centavos from Thursday's finish of P61.62:$1. This upward trend for the peso is largely attributed to softer US inflation data, which has diminished the possibility of a Federal Reserve rate hike. Michael Ricafort, chief economist at Rizal Commercial Banking Corp., noted that reduced odds of a possible 0.25% Fed rate hike by December 2026, following mostly softer US economic data lately, have contributed to the greenback's weakness. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the consumer price index decreased by 0.4% in June, down from a 0.5% decrease in May, signaling a cooling inflation environment in the United States. Further bolstering the peso, according to Ricafort, is the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' (BSP) cautious stance against the use of foreign exchange derivatives transactions to profit from currency volatility. Additionally, recent signals from Malacañang, the presidential palace, have reinforced that the BSP remains the primary institution mandated to stabilize the peso and manage excessive volatility in the foreign exchange market. For the Philippine economy, currency stability is crucial as it directly impacts import costs and inflation. A stronger peso can contribute to domestic economic stability, though excessive appreciation could potentially affect export competitiveness.
