■ Deputy Minister responds: Strict action taken if corruption, illegal trade found An MP from Theebaw constituency, U Kyaw Thant San, asked in parliament how illegal trade and corruption worth hundreds of millions of kyats, occurring behind the closure of Theebaw Bridge, would be prevented and acted upon. During the 31st day of the 2nd regular session of the 3rd Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, held on July 28, U Kyaw Thant San, the People's Hluttaw representative for Theebaw constituency, posed a related question concerning the plan to allow local residents, regional vehicles, and regional goods to pass through Theebaw Bridge under a specific system. In his follow-up question, he included the aforementioned point. "As the minister mentioned earlier, I understand the security measures being taken. However, behind this bridge closure, there is the enrichment of a group of people and illegal trade. Illegal trade, which the President of the Republic always speaks about. As we presented earlier, there are incidents like 36 million kyats per day, and at the jetty, 1.8 million kyats per day. If the bridge is closed, other routes must also be closed. Instead, how will illegal trade, corruption, and criminal acts be prevented and acted upon? " U Kyaw Thant San asked. He continued, "After this bridge was closed, three major issues arose. First, corruption. Second, illegal smuggling entered through this illegal route. We knew about it but could not apprehend them. Third, illegal arms sales occurred in the region. Therefore, as a first question, how can corruption and criminal acts deeply involved in illegal trade be prevented and acted upon?
MNDAA, TNLA and PDF are active on the eastern side of Tebaw Bridge and in the remaining village tracts, thus the bridge has been temporarily closed due to the security situation, said Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Major General Min Thu. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Major General Min Thu, in response to the question raised by U Kyaw Thet San, Member of Parliament for Tebaw Constituency, on the 31st day of the 2nd regular session of the 3rd Pyidaungsu Hluttaw held on July 28, asking "What is the plan to allow local people, regional vehicles, and regional goods to pass through Tebaw Bridge in what system? " The Deputy Minister said, "From August 10, 2024, terrorist groups calling themselves MDIA, MNDAA, and PDF launched attacks with overwhelming force, so the security forces temporarily withdrew. Then, the Tatmadaw columns carried out attacks and suppression operations to regain control of Tebaw town, which was temporarily controlled by the terrorists. As territorial control was regained on October 18, 2025, and civil servants were redeployed, local people were also urged to return and reside within Tebaw Township." "Although the Tebaw Bridge was passable in summer, rainy season, and dry season during peaceful times, due to the current security situation, only 11 wards in the town and nine village tracts are under control and passable. However, terrorist groups calling themselves MNDAA, TNLA, and PDF have not completely withdrawn and are still active on the eastern side of Tebaw Bridge and in the remaining village tracts. Therefore, due to the security situation, the Tebaw Bridge is currently temporarily closed for security reasons," the Deputy Minister said. Furthermore, the Deputy Minister replied, "For regional development, economic, social, and trade activities, regional stability must first be achieved. To achieve regional stability, the Tatmadaw, including security organizations, are currently prioritizing stability. Therefore, local residents currently living in the Tebaw region can only travel via the Namlan-Kyaukgu-Yatsohk road, which is safe and reliable." The Tebaw Bridge is located on the Mandalay-Lashio-Bhamo-Myitkyina road, and it was constructed over the Duwunthi River between mileposts 130/3 and 130/4, between the Panthaytan Ward and Pansawmiin village tract, leading to Tebaw town. The bridge is 569 feet long, with a 28-foot-wide roadway and a 5-foot-wide pedestrian walkway.
