Growth Mindset: Unlocking the Potential of Today’s Youth

IN an era defined by rapid technological advancement, global competition, and unprecedented social change, success is no longer determined solely by intelligence or natural talent. Instead, it increasingly depends on how individuals respond to challenges, adapt to change, and commit themselves to lifelong learning. For today’s youth, one of the most valuable assets they can develop is a growth mindset – the belief that abilities, intelligence, and skills can be cultivated through dedication, perseverance, and continuous effort. The world that young people are entering is vastly different from that of previous generations. Artificial intelligence is transforming industries, automation is reshaping the labour market, and new careers are emerging every year. In such a dynamic environment, adaptability and the willingness to learn have become more valuable than relying solely on existing knowledge or innate ability. Understanding the Growth Mindset The concept of the growth mindset was introduced by renowned psychologist Dr Carol S Dweck of Stanford University. Her research distinguishes between two ways of thinking: the fixed mindset and the growth mindset. Individuals with a fixed mindset believe that intelligence and talent are largely predetermined and cannot be significantly improved. Consequently, they often avoid difficult tasks, fear criticism, and become discouraged by failure. In contrast, people with a growth mindset view challenges as opportunities for improvement. They understand that effort strengthens ability, that mistakes are valuable learning experiences, and that persistence eventually leads to success. Rather than asking, “Am I talented enough? ” they ask, “What can I learn from this experience?
